Introducing Minimahl

We’re happy to present Ahlera’s very own free WordPress theme.  The theme’s name is Minimahl.  As the name suggests, it is a stripped down theme, right down to the bare essentials.

We like the idea of showing the content in a clean and clear way and we think Minimahl is just right for this.

Minimahl has all the bells and whistles, minus the clutter. It supports Gravatars, widgets, etc.

The theme works correctly in standard installations of the following versions of WordPress: 1.5.2, 2.0, 2.3.3, 2.6.5, 2.7, 2.7.1.

There is a single documented issue with the backgrounds on the sidebar in versions 2.1 and 2.2.

Minimahl is also ad-ready. Enabling the ads is very simple. Just follow the instructions in the extensive readme file.

You may download Minimahl from the official WordPress website.  Click here to go straight to the download page.

If you’d like to look through the readme file, click here.

We hope that the WordPress community enjoys Minimahl!

    Hi there, I just wanted to say thank you for the theme, I love it. I just launched a new blog and have used this theme, which is perfect with its modern – minimalist style.

    Question though, the comment form didn’t come standard with a ‘website’ field. My attempts to introduce the field into the form have just ended with me destroying the beautiful look of the form (my html skills are amateur at best :/ Any help with the coding would be very much appreciated or if it could be introduced into WP as an option – maybe I just don’t know how to turn it on…

    Thanks again, Matt

    Hi Matt! Thanks for stopping by!

    You are correct and this was an overlook we had when we did the theme. It sounds stupid, but it happens. That fix is planned for version 0.9.8 coming up soon. If you can wait a couple of weeks, we’ll have that solved.

    Thanks Daiver, I’ll be eagerly waiting for the update.

    I’ll make sure to comment on it here so that you get the notification via email when it is out. =)

    we are in the development of a new website for one of my companies and i am using your great template, i like the simplicity (plus it acutally works with contact form 7 which is a plus.

    I am having trouble getting the sidebar to align to the right (it is overlapping the picture we want to show.

    This site is basic and one of many so we don’t put too much time. Is there a simple change i can do in the template editor

    thanks

    Hi Max,

    Your problem can be easily fixed by using a smaller image of the complex. I’ve sent you a smaller version of the same image via email.

    Hi Max,

    You still have a problem with the menu going down. This is because the title text is too long. Try decreasing the font size of the title by following the following steps:

    1) Open style.css

    2) Find this:

    #header h1 { float: left; font-size: 80px; letter-spacing: -0.1em; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding-right: 10px; }

    Replace with:

    #header h1 { float: left; font-size: 55px; letter-spacing: -0.1em; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding-right: 10px; }

    3) Upload back to the server and replace the existing one

    4) Profit!

    You can play around with the font-size attribute to accomodate your title’s needs. In this case, you can see that I’ve replaced “font-size: 80px” with “font-size: 55px” in that line. This number controls the font size and you can play around with it until it looks just right.

    This should solve your menu and description going down a couple of lines.

    Hope it helps!

    Your theme is COOL. I have it on DeafBC.ca now.

    There is only one column. I want 2 columns (right side for widgets). How do I fix it?

    Thanks a million.

    Hi Forrest!

    Did you touch anything within the theme? Becasue it doesn’t look like you made any mods to it.

    Hi Daiver,

    No, I haven’t touched anything in the theme.

    Hi,

    I like the theme. However, I would want to turn it into a three column, removing the ad column and enabling that as another column for widgets. Any tips on what to include in the sidebar.php to get that going?

    Thanks!

    Arne

  14. On April 22, 2009 at 12:49 pm

    Forrest: I’m not quite sure what happened because you don’t have anything on the page that would make the design “break”, like a large image or something like that. At this point, all that I can suggest is to reinstall the theme to see if it gets fixed.

    Arne: I’m not sure what can be done since I’m not a coder. My suggestion is to ask the question in the official WordPress forums. They might be able to help. It is most likely a simple process, but I’m not familiar with the problem and right now we’re swamped with work, so I can’t ask one of our developers to look into it. Your best bet is the WP forums and if that fails, please email sayhello@ahlera.com and we’ll quote you a small fee to look into it.

    Hey Guys!

    LOVE the theme. Quick question though, and forgive me if this is a simple thing, I’m somewhat new.

    Is it possible to switch where the ad column and content column are? I’d like to have my categories, meta and such on the outside (right) and my AdSense code on the inside (left, closer to my posts).

    Thanks!

    Dexter

  16. On April 27, 2009 at 5:21 pm

    Hi Dexter!

    I’m glad you enjoy the theme. =)

    What you want to do is definitely possible, but since I’m not a programmer I can’t tell you exactly how. (I could probably work around it, but it wouldn’t be the “right” solution.)

    My recommendation is to ask in the WP forums since our theme is very standard in terms of code and they can probably give more better advice than I can. As I told Forrest, if the WP forums fail and you’d like us to look into it in more detail, please contact us at sayhello@ahlera.com and we’ll quote you a small fee to get it done quickly.

    Great theme:

    Was wondering how to fix the issue of the website field when leaving comments?

    Also, how would I remove the little border around each image?

    And my search button doesn’t work when i click on it, i have to press return always

    Hi Nick,

    Thanks for the kind comments.

    The URL field and the search button are two of the things we’re fixing for 0.9.8, and we still don’t have a set release date for that, but we’re working on it. I will most definitely post here when that’s out.

    Regarding the borders, which ones are you talking about? I’ve checked out your blog and the images there don’t have a border. Can you please explain this a bit further?

    Thanks and we hope you enjoy Minimahl!

    To solve the searchbutton problem simply edit the file search_form.php in your minimahl theme folder.

    you have to change

    type=”button”

    to

    type=”submit”

    Thanks so much for this theme! It’s not easy finding a minimal, white, theme that has any interesting design to it. One question. Is there any way to remove the Ad column completely to allow for a wider entry column?

  25. On June 11, 2009 at 10:50 pm

    Hi John,

    I’m glad you like the theme.

    There is a way to do what you need as seen on http://version3.co.nz/ but I’m not really sure how since I’m not a programmer :P

    I’m pretty sure you need to edit stuff on sidebar.php, but I don’t know what.

    However, please note that version 0.9.8 will be a two-column design, much like the link above.

  26. On June 11, 2009 at 10:54 pm

    Yes!! Version3’s design is exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks, Daiver! I’m patient, I can wait. When, did you say 0.9.8 was coming out? ;-P

  27. On June 11, 2009 at 10:55 pm

    It is coming up on our queue list, but if I tell you I specific date, I’d be lying.

    Hey man, thanks for the fresh theme. SInce upgrading Wordpress I can not edit the widgets. Is this a theme issue or a wordpress issue?

    Thanks,
    SB

  29. On June 15, 2009 at 9:05 am

    I doubt it would be a WordPress issue. It must be something with Minimahl. If it is, we’ll catch it with testing when we finish 0.9.8..

    I’m glad you enjoy the theme!

    Hi Daiver,

    Let me echo the many others in sending you a big *thanks* for creating such a beautifully clean, non-fussy theme! I settled on Minimahl quickly after an extensive search. Yours was the only one that fit the bill. I was specifically looking for something super clean, flexible AND 3 column.

    I have been dragging my feet to upgrade to WP 2.8+ because of compatibility concern with your 0.9.7 version. Sounds like my wait is warranted after hearing of Brewster’s issue with not being able to edit his widgets after he upgraded his WP.

    So I see that 0.9.8 is coming out at an undetermined date and it is only going to be 2 columns, eh? Aargh, I really need the option of 3 columns. I really like how the current version gives you the option of 2 vs. 3. May I ask if you would consider leaving in the 2 to 3 column option, pretty please?

    Thank you for your time and expertise in creating Minimahl. You do great work! I have also enjoyed perusing the Ahlera portfolio.

    Hi there! Thanks so much for this fabulous theme. I’m using it on my blog (I’ve made a few tweaks to match my aesthetic), and absolutely love it.

    I just wanted to point out one little thing. (I am very new to CSS, so I apologize if I say something strangely) I noticed that the “older posts” and “newer posts” weren’t showing up the way the other links were. The main index php creates a divclass called “navigation” for this, but there was no class called navigation in the stylesheet. I went ahead and created one.

    I just appended this to the end of the stylesheet (these are my colors, not the standard):

    /* NAVIGATION */

    .navigation a:link, .navigation a:visited { color: #FF0066; text-decoration: underline; }

    .navigation a:hover, .navigation a:active { color: #000000; text-decoration: underline; }

    Thanks again for a great theme!!

    Hey guys, I found 3 obvious bugs which I’m sure you’ve already heard about but here:

    1. The bottom links for Newer/Older Entries are not themed and have the classic blue/red/purple link colors (Universal)

    2. Calendar is aligned left at index should be center to agree with the other widgets (Chrome only possibly)

    3. Calendar’s first row (1 2 3 etc) gets pushed left while the rest remain in place (Chrome only possibly)

    Other than that the theme kicks some serious butt, very professional, very referral worthy, keep up the amazing creative work!
